CHAPTER 15

DELPHON

I sat down heavily on the couch, Annie’s announcement weighing on me even though I knew it was the right thing to do.

“Well…” What was that word Annie used so often that even Aethan had taken to using it? Oh right. “Fuck.”

Annie, Aethan and Keph had returned from their excursion, laden with clothes and food. Then they’d told us the realization Annie had come to and what it would mean. We were going to face off against a powerful ancient goddess.

“Indeed,” Rion said, sitting beside me. He seemed just as surprised and stunned as I was.

“But how do we even find her?” Annie asked softly.

I pointed at Keph. “Tell her.”

“Oh, right,” Aethan said, realizing what I meant before the stone titan did.

Keph looked confused for a moment as everyone looked at him, then his eyes widened with understanding. “I have the sight. I may be able to divine her location.”

“The sight?” Annie asked.

“It’s how we knew where to find you for—” Aethan snapped his mouth shut, realizing too late he was about to mention the mess we’d made of her brother’s bonding ceremony.

“The wedding?” Annie finished. “That explains a lot.” She sighed. “Don’t worry too much about what happened that day. It was everyone’s fault, even mine. Someday I’m going to have to tell my brother the truth, but that’s not today.” She turned to Keph. “How does this ‘sight’ work?”

He shrugged his massive round shoulders. “Usually I don’t want it to happen and it just comes upon me. But… I was able to draw upon it once before when needed. I’ll need to concentrate for a while.” He looked around. “It would help if I could have the scent of earth and stone around me.”

I looked around. Annie’s home had several dead plants, but that was it.

“Ah… yeah…” she said, drawing the words out in thought.

“I’ve got this.” Aethan was gone in a flash, the door slamming shut behind him, though none of us saw him leave.

It was so sudden, we all just stared at the door for a long moment.

“I wonder what he’s doing?” Rion finally asked.

“I’d guess he’s going to find some earth and stone?” I replied.

“He’s going to have trouble with that around here, especially with snow covering everything. I don’t know—”

The door slammed open and shut again, cutting Annie off, and Aethan appeared before us. He was huffing and sweating as he put down several buckets, then took off his jacket.

“Got it,” he said.

Indeed, there were two buckets of dark loamy earth and one with small to fist sized stones.

“Where—?” Annie asked.

“When we were out for our walk, I noticed a store which had some—” He frowned. “What did they call it? Right! Gardening supplies. I went back there. I didn’t have any of your little bits of plastic to pay for it, so I’m afraid I stole it, but I figured we’re saving the world so…” He shrugged.

“Gardening supplies?” Annie frowned. “Hunh. Right. I don’t pay any attention to it much, but yeah, we did pass a hardware store didn’t we.
